Family Bingo Night Matters: Why a Simple Game is the Perfect Escape for Kids and Families

After a long day at the hospital, families return to Ronald McDonald House looking for something every family needs—space to breathe, a little laughter, and a chance to feel normal again. That’s where Bingo Night comes in!

At Little Smiles, our Family Bingo Nights take place in the dining areas of Ronald McDonald Houses in Philadelphia on Chestnut Street, Camden, New Jersey, and Wilmington, Delaware. The setting matters. These aren’t hospital hallways or clinical spaces. These are the places families come back to after appointments, treatments, scans, and long, emotional days. And for one joyful stretch of the evening, the energy shifts.

A card fills up. A parent leans in. A kid locks onto the next number. Then comes the best moment of all:

BINGO!

That sound means more than a win. It means escape. It means connection. It means a child gets to be a child, and a family gets a break from the weight they’ve been carrying. That’s why this program matters so much to us. We are a nonprofit for children built around one simple belief: joy isn’t extra—it helps heal.

More Than Just a Game: Joy That Gives Families a Breather

When a child is going through serious illness or trauma, life can start to revolve around schedules, medications, tests, and waiting rooms. So much of childhood gets pushed aside. Play helps bring some of it back!

That’s exactly what our Family Bingo Nights are designed to do. They create a real break in the day—a reset button families can actually feel. For a little while, the focus isn’t on the next appointment. It’s on the table in front of you, the excitement in the room, and the hope that the next number called is yours.

Research continues to show that play and positive distraction matter. They can lower stress, lift mood, and help kids and caregivers feel more grounded in the middle of a hard season. But honestly, when you see it in person, you don’t need a study to explain it. You can feel it. The laughter gets louder. Shoulders drop. Smiles come easier. That’s the kind of healing space we want to help create.

A House Full of Heart: How Bingo Looks in Philadelphia, Camden, and Wilmington

We’re proud to partner with Ronald McDonald House programs in Philadelphia, Camden, and Wilmington to make these nights happen.

At RMH Philadelphia, our role is part of something bigger. Little Smiles provides a crew of volunteers who prepare and serve dinner through RMHC Philly’s Served With Love program. Dinner is served around 6 p.m. for 250+ families, and it’s a huge act of care all by itself. At the same time, a separate crew—led by Smile Captain Kendall Brew—runs Bingo alongside the dinner service, helping turn the dining area into a warm, welcoming space filled with laughter and friendly competition. The distinction matters: the meal is part of Served With Love, and Bingo is its own joyful Little Smiles experience happening right alongside it.

In Camden and Wilmington, the vibe is a little different—but just as special. Those nights are all about high-energy game play, family interaction, and the kind of joyful chaos that happens when kids and grown-ups are equally determined to win. In Camden, Smile Captain Bella Minnitti helps lead the fun. In Wilmington, Smile Captains Diane Wilson and Tony Grandizio help keep the energy high and the room full of smiles.

No matter the location, the heart of the program stays the same. Families come back to The House after difficult hospital days, and together we help make the evening feel lighter.

The Prize That Steals the Show: RC Cars!

Let’s talk prizes—because yes, they matter!

We bring a variety of fun items to Bingo Night, but the clear fan favorite is the remote control car. It’s the prize that instantly changes the room. Kids love them. Adults love them. Siblings want a turn. Parents get pulled in. Volunteers start cheering. And one of the best parts is how naturally RC cars level the playing field between kids and adults—and between able-bodied and disabled kids, too.

That’s what makes them so powerful. Everyone can get in on the fun. Everyone can laugh. Everyone can race.

We don’t need to overstate it. You watch an RC car zip across the floor, and suddenly the whole room is engaged. It’s amazing, it’s authentic, and it’s one of those simple Little Smiles moments that says everything about why we do this work.

What Bingo Night Is—And What It Isn’t

Family Bingo Night is not a hospital snack run, and it’s not a pizza party. Those moments matter too—but they belong to a different Little Smiles program. Our Junk Food Runs are separate events entirely.

For Bingo Night in Philadelphia, the meal families enjoy is the dinner our volunteers prepare and serve through Served With Love. In Camden and Wilmington, the focus is the game itself and the community it creates. A special thanks to Bancroft Construction in Wilmington, who recently stepped up to sponsor our Wilmington Bingo Nights! What ties all three locations together is not food or fanfare—it’s the feeling. Families get to gather around tables, share a real moment together, and enjoy an evening that feels joyful instead of overwhelming.

That authenticity matters to us. We never need to embellish these nights. The real stories are already powerful enough.
